Yes, as early as 7th grade, SSA starts talking to the students regarding colleges and scholarships. Starting in 9th grades students are required to enroll in college preparation elective class where they start realizing monthly college-bound goals.

SSA offers an individualized math and reading program in grades K-5. This allows for students to work at an advanced pace and to be challenged on a daily basis. In grades 6-12, SSA offers an individualized math program with minimum levels at each grade level. Independent study in all courses is also available and worked out between the student, parents and classroom teachers with academic contracts. They are all at the College Preparatory level with many students opting for Honors or AP courses

Yes, students are able to order lunch by selecting the days on the order form. All lunches are ordered by the 20th of the preceding month. Currently, a caterer brings lunch each day; lunch is $3.25 per day.

Most of the teachers at SSA have Arizona teaching certificate and all the teachers are considered highly qualified as defined by No Child Left Behind Act.

Each Kindergarten- 5th grade student has PE, Art, Music and Library time each week. 4th and 5th graders also have Spanish each week. 6th graders have Art, 7th graders have music and 8th graders have Drama 2 times a week. Drama, Band and Art are also offered as after school extra-curricular activities.

SSA opened in September 2001. We started out with 86 students and have since grown to over 400.

SSA offers free tutoring after school in all subject areas check from 3:00-4:00 for elementary students and from 3:15-4:15 for middle and high school students. In some cases tutoring can also be arranged on Saturdays. Check with your child’s teacher to find out the exact datys of the week for their tutoring.

School takes college counseling very seriously. SSA offers both Career and College planning electives which students are required to enroll. Each student is expected follow their 4 year college-plan; which includes researching majors and how to select college major. Each student has individual college and career planning website (Supported by Naviance Inc.). It allows students to explore, compare and make informed decision about different careers.

SSA gives individualized attention to each student in college application, financial aides and applying for scholarships. Each student has individual online college planning site. It has all features one needs to strategically plan one’s future. All task and assignment completed online are continuously monitored by school counselor. Further, SSA offer summer enrichment programs (e.g. SAT camps, College visits, etc). All of our teachers have email addresses located on our website under faculty. You can also call the school and press their extension. All teachers have voice mail also so you can leave a message anytime.

Each classroom teacher has a classroom management plan that is posted in the classroom and sent home with the syllabus at the beginning of the year. In addition, DPS points can be given, if a student reaches a defined number of points in school suspension or out of school suspension can result.
