Creative Communication's Poetry Contest

Ms. Blackhall's 2nd grade student, Alexis Leon-Guerrero was chosen as a Top Ten Winner in Creative Communication's Poetry Contest.  Her poem titled "Fire in My Eyes" is presented in the book, "A Celebration of Poets"  which includes poems from students across the United States.  Her poem is featured on its own page and she received a $50.00 savings bond.  This is quite an achievement as several thousand poems entered the contest.  Congratulations Alexis!  Visit www.poeticpower.com for more information about this contest and other resources.

SSA Students' Achievement in Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (AzSEF)

Great Success in Southern Arizona Science and Engineering Fair (SARSEF)

Sonoran Students Compete in Their First Science Olympiad

On Saturday, March 13, Sonoran Science Academy students competed in their first-ever Arizona State Science Olympiad competition. Science Olympiad is one of the premiere science competitions in the country, with over 5300 teams competing in 48 states. A Consistent Winner

For the third year in a row, Katharine McMurray, a junior at Sonoran Science Academy, has participated in the American Legion National Oratorical Contest. SSA Middle School Volleyball Team wins Championship

SSA volleyball team posted a six win and one loss season record this year. After breezing though the preliminary rounds of the post-season championship tournament, the Eagle Volleyball Team landed in the finals across the court from their nemesis, La Paloma. Falling behind by losing the first game, the Eagle’s found themselves with their backs to the wall. Winning the next game by only two points, the Eagle’s used the momentum from that game and overpowered La Paloma in the third and final game to win decisively and take away the first place trophy.  

A New School Site on the Air Force Base

SSA is pleased to announce the opening of a new school site on the Davis Monthan Air Force Base.  The school is schedule to open August 2009.

Ostin Zarse Qualifies for the State Geography Bee

Ostin Zarse, an 8^th grade student at Sonoran Science Academy, was recently qualified to compete in the State level. He won the school-level competition of the National Geographic Bee on January 13, 2009 and a chance at a $25,000 college scholarship. The school-level Bee, at which students answered oral questions on geography, was the first round in the 21^st annual National Geographic Bee. The Bee is sponsored by the National Geographic Society. Mr. Bahar received Math Hero Award from Raytheon

   SSA is proud to announce that our math teacher Mr. Kadir Bahar has been awarded a Math Hero Award from MathMovesU, a national initiative from Raytheon Company.  Math Hero Awards from MathMovesU rewards teachers and volunteers for promoting math to students in a fun and challenging learning environment. Mr. Bahar was nominated by students, parents and faculty members for his enthusiasm and interest in teaching math to others. Math Hero Award from MathMoves U recently recognized Mr. Bahar and 31 teachers and volunteers across the United States, whose efforts in the classroom interest and engage students in math through effective and creative learning exercises.

 SSA Competed in the Arizona Academic Decathlon

Representative Crandall invited SSA Academic Decathlon Team to the State Capitol

On April 21, the SSA Academic Decathlon team went where no Sonoran Science Academy had gone before: to the Arizona State House of Representatives courtesy of Rep. Richard Crandall. Southern Arizona Language Fair (SALF)

Southern Arizona Language Fair was an exciting multicultural attraction for language students, teachers and parents. This event which included competitors from all over southern Arizona brought over 2,000 foreign language students ranging from kindergarten to college. Joshua Sloane will Represent Arizona in MathCounts Competition

SSA-Tucson student Joshua Sloane, 13, and three of his peers from the Phoenix area have earned the right to be called champions.
The middle school students didn't earn that title by competing on the hardwood or the gridiron, but in classrooms, armed with pencils, paper and calculators.
The students emerged as the top "mathletes" out of the 100 who competed in the MathCounts statewide competition Saturday at Cienega High School. [Read More...]

The Math League sponsored competition is a series of six monthly tests given to over one million high school students each year to challenge their mathematical abilities. At this time, the fourth monthly test has been taken. Currently, SSA students are leading in their cumulative score of all the Arizona schools participating. Richard Spence, a freshman at the Sonoran Science Academy in Tucson, walked away with the top prize at the “Who Wants to be a Mathematician” contest on Saturday, November 15. SSA Student Selected for American Mathematical Society Competition

Richard Spence, a freshman at Sonoran Science Academy, has been invited to compete in the AMS sponsored competition "Who Wants to be a Mathematician". The competition is limited to only eight students from the southern Arizona area who were invited to participate on the basis of a qualifying exam taken earlier this month.

Sonoran Science Academy was praised in a news article released November 30, 2007 by U.S. News and World Report. The list names 1,600 of the nation’s 18,000 high schools. The article recognized specific schools based on factors such as: 1) Standardized Test Scores, 2) Performance of Disadvantaged Students, and 3) Number of seniors taking and passing college level Advanced Placement Exams. Sonoran Science Academy was honored to be among the best high schools and received a bronze medal.

About 20 students from Arizona, California, and Utah have spent hot summer days solving non-routine math problems at Sonoran Science Academy in Tucson, Arizona. Sonoran Science Academy (SSA) is organizing the MSOP Summer Camp in coordination with Accord Institute for Education Research, a company based in Orange County.
