Sonoran Science takes 1st at area math contest

Sonoran Science Academy will advance to the state finals of MathCounts after ranking first Saturday in the Southern Arizona competition, contest coordinators said.
The other top-ranking teams in Saturday's regional MathCounts competition here were listed as Desert Sky Middle School, Alice Vail Middle School, Emily Gray Junior High School, R.B. Wilson K-8 School, Amphitheater Middle School, Coronado K-8 School and Corona Foothills Middle School.
About 130 students participated in the academic event at Cienega High School.
Among them, the top-ranking students were Joshua Sloan of Sonoran Science Academy, Peter Bian of Sonoran Science Academy, Courtney Spalt of Emily Gray Junior High School, Nicholas McFarlin of Sonoran Science Academy and Kirk Hendricks of BASIS Tucson. They will advance to the state final.
Rounding out the top 10 here were Stephanie Mendivil of Desert Sky Middle School, Stan Palasek of Sonoran Science Academy, Nam Ngo of Desert Sky Middle School, Ostin Zarse of Sonoran Science Academy and Dulce Ochoa of Alice Vail Middle School, according to Priscilla Thompson, one of the event's Southern Arizona coordinators.
The state competition will be held on March 14, also at Cienega High School.
