Again Honor Roll at the American Mathematical Competition 8
SSA Middle School Math Team was recently recognized as one of two schools from Arizona making the Honor roll on American Mathematical Competition 8. On November 18, over 148,000 students and 2300 schools across the nation and 15 countries competed in the American Mathematics Competition 8. This middle school math contest, now in its 24th year, aims to spur interest in math at a formative age, and to develop mathematical talents through friendly competition.
SSA reported a team score (sum of top 3 scores) of 68 placing the school on the Arizona Honor Roll (this roll is achieved by attaining a score of 66 through 75). SSA was one of two schools from Arizona making the Honor roll. There were three students Joshua Sloane (24), Peter Bian (22) and Jackie Marlin (22) who received the distinction award (score of 22 or higher out of 25). There were five honor roll award )(score of 19-21 out of 25) students Sloan Kanaski (21), David Wang (21), Nicholas McFarlin (21), James Parisi (19) and Ostin Zarse (19) and six merit achievement award students (a student must be a 6th grader who received a score of 12 or higher) from SSA on the list.
The AMC 8 is a 25 question, 40 minute multiple choice examination in junior high school (middle school) mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills. The examination provides an opportunity to apply the concepts taught at the junior high level to problems which not only range from easy to difficult but also cover a wide range of applications. Many problems are designed to challenge students and to offer problem solving experiences beyond those provided in most junior high school mathematics classes.
