Sonoran Science Academy Decathlon Team Advances to State

21 schools participated in the regional competition and SSA’s team performance advanced them to the state competition, which will be in Phoenix, in March. Individually, Ian Armstrong garnered a gold medal in math and Brian Cloutier received a bronze medal in chemistry. Great Honor for Mr. Kadir Bahar by Mathematical Association of America

Sonoran ScienceAcademy math teacher Kadir Bahar was recently informed that he is the recipient of a 2009 Edyth May Sliffe Award. This award is given to teachers by the Mathematical Association of America, recognizing a teacher’s contribution to repeated student success in the American Mathematics Contest 8. The AMC 8, open to all students in grades 6-8 is a 25 question, 40 minute multiple choice examination in middle school mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills. Mr. Bahar becomes only the third Middle School math teacher to receive the award in Arizona, and the first since 1997. He will receive his award at the upcoming National Council of Teachers of Mathematics conference in San Diego, California.

SSA Students Win VFW Patriot Pen and VOD Awards

 T-REX Wins Big at Las Vegas FTC Regional Tournament

The Tucson Robotic Engineering eXperts (T-REX) at Sonoran Science Academy on Sunset Rd. came home victorious from the Las Vegas First Tech Challenge Regional Tournament this past weekend. Made up of 8^th and 9^th grade students, T-REX competed against 24 other schools, mostly high schools, from AZ, CA, NV, UT, and Canada. T-REX’s robot, Rexy 2.1, has the fastest ball collector, stores the most balls, drives quickly and shoots balls rapidly. [Read More...]
