SSA D-M Parent Testimonials

“I do love that Sonoran has taught my daughter skills that I did not learn until I was a junior in high school: writing papers in a specific format, how to write essays, and an overall college approach to school.  She has learned that what she does now will help prepare her for college, and I am excited that she is so college focused!!!”

Jennifer Coughlin

“It is not by coincidence that Sonoran Science Academy is on Davis-Monthan AFB and that my daughter attends the school.  Had the school picked a different location, I can only hope we would have found them.  SSA has a good curriculum, caring teachers and administrative staff, and a desire by all to create a healthy climate for children to grow. The students are monitored continuously, which creates a safe learning environment. These are key factors in giving children a good education, and SSA has worked hard to achieve this standard.

In my daughter’s 5th grade year while attending a different charter school, she was attacked by another student during recess.  I was not called, there was inadequate staff available to monitor the large student body, and the administrative staff spoke to me in a very off- handed way when the problem was addressed.  In an attempt to find a better school environment for our daughter, we went in search of a school with a desire for higher educational standards; smaller classroom sizes; and educated, caring teachers who communicate with parents as well as strive to better themselves and their students through challenges.  We found not only a great school environment for our daughter at SSA Davis-Monthan, but peace of  mind that being a part of SSA means being part of a team effort to better prepare our daughter for her future.”

Serena Compton

“I am extremely pleased with my choice to send my two children to SSA D-M.  I believe that their curriculum far surpasses what is required by the state of Arizona.  Both of my children have excelled both intellectually, as well as socially.  SSA D-M goes above and beyond by offering Advanced Math and Science Program (AMSP), STARBASE, Drama, Lego Robotics, and so much more.  I would not be able to find a more perfect match for my children in the state of Arizona.”

Salvaging Sisterhood Groups have been meeting.  One seventh and one eighth grade group have been meeting for 6 weeks.  This group  gives us a chance to address relational aggression and learn ways to be even better friends!

COMING SOON:  This month Deployment Support And New Student Support groups will begin.

MLK
Minimize

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" On January 16, 2012 we celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He dedicated his life to serving his community and, as a result, made the world a better place. The Montgomery Bus Boycotts of 1955 gave him the opportunity to lead thousands of African-Americans as they peacefully protested for Civil Rights. He spent his last years continuing to working for Civil Rights, opposing the Vietnam War, and organizing a "Poor People's Campaign" as a call for economic justice. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his service. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at the age of 39, was assassinated on the evening of April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day was first observed in 1986. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday as a national day of service. This day should really be a “day on, not a day off.” There are many events in Tucson to commemorate Dr. King’s birthday. One in particular is a march on Monday, January 16, 2012 that will begin at the University of Arizona at 8:30 a.m. and end at Reid Park with a festival to follow. However you choose to spend MLK day, take time to remember Dr. King’s peaceful leadership, determination for change, and his vision of equal rights for all.
