MathCounts

The Regional MathCounts competition was held at Cienega High School (2/4/2012). The MathCounts program is sponsored by Raytheon. Nine schools sent teams and individuals to compete in four rounds of math competitions. The Sprint Round and Target Round determined who would face off in the Countdown Round (an exciting head-to-head round where the question is shown on the screen and the student has to buzz in to answer). There was also a Team Round where teams of four Mathletes answered ten questions together.

Of the top ten individuals, eight of them were from Sonoran Science Academy schools. The First Place Individual went to 8th grader Oshadha Gunesekara of Sonoran Science Academy – Broadway. (His brother, Lahiru Gunesekara, placed 3rd individually and is in 6th grade.) Five students from SSA-Broadway placed in the top 10 including the two mentioned plus Zach Kirch, Samuel Merson, and Zach Hurtado. SSA-Broadway took home the First Place Team award and will automatically advance to the State competition to be held on 3/31/2012.

In addition we have a responsibility to provide information regarding early intervention services for children birth through 2.9 years.
